Saturday morning…

Yes, it is 8:27 Saturday morning and I am sitting at my laptop in my space at the con.  Kettle is boiling.  Rehearsal this afternoon for Britten’s War Requiem, so why not come in and do the work I planned to do on Thursday this morning?  It’s not like it is a nice sunny autumn day outside…which is why I shall shortly take my pot of tea and laptop and adjourn to the deck.  No, we don’t have a deck attached to the student offices, though that would be very nice.  We don’t even have a window, save the goldfish bowl one that leads directly to the staff photocopier in the hall.  But I know where the deck is and this morning it shall be mine.

I have arrived, teapot, farmer’s market cheese plunder, and all.  I feel quite victorious, having survived the jealous gazes from the parents as I hurried along the hall with a pot of tea as sat and waited for their children.  I know it’s the tea and not the work they wanted, though.  So, here’s to it.  (And I have to say that cheese plunder is even more fabulous fresh than it is after it has laid around forgotten for a few days and is slightly iffy – well done, King of Bread!)

This morning’s task?  Notating the physical papers  for my sys lit review and matching them in NVivo, EndNote, and the word doc.

Adachi and Trehub, 2011; Custodero, Britto, & Xin, 2002; Hallam, 2010; de Vries, 2009; Hallam, 2010; Custodero et al, 2003; Anvari, Trainor, Woodside, and Levy, 2002…

Empirical – that was the word that has been on the tip of my tongue all morning!

Just finished rehearsals of the Britten War Requiem, the real purpose for my visit to the Con today.  Nearly time to go home.  Still have about 3 inches of papers to input.  Enthusiasm, enthusiasm, I’ve got lots of enthusiasm…no, I really don’t.  How long do you think it will take to finish?   I think, without distraction 2 hours.  Since I get distracted by birds flying past the window, this could be a major event. I will let you know how it goes.

Grand plans gone awry…

So…big plans to input papers into NVivo.  Papers are at home.  I am here.  Freud would have a lot to say about this, indubitably.  It’s not like I don’t have enough to do without the papers, but that was the plan, and here I sit – all dressed up and nowhere to go.

On to plan B.  EndNote search.  I took all of my physical papers home for sorting.  Wait, opening the filing cabinet reveals that this is not at all correct.  And we have Baddeley’s 2003 paper on working memory and language and a paper on speech v. singing courtesy of Diana Deutsch.

OK – so the plan is not to reread research, but to write, but now I have a pot of tea.  5-minutes.  Time me.

Baddeley, A (2003).  Working memory and language: an overview, Journal of Communication Disorders, 36. 189-207.  Discusses multi-component working memory framed by the tripartite model from his 1974 book authored with Graham Hitch.  ‘Their data indicated that there was indeed progressive impairment as the concurrent digit load was increased, but the effect was far from dramatic.’ – remember this, it is important.

In undergrad psych, we were told Baddeley and Hitch found there was no interference between the operation of visual short term memory and auditory short term memory, as if there were two completely separate systems.  If this were true, you could be watching the road while you drive and listening to a conversation and be fully aware and attentive to both tasks.  Research indicates that people turn down the radio when they need to focus on driving.  Attention is the big ticket item here.

And pay attention is what I need to do…starting right….now…..

Community Choir…..

So, I am babysitting a choir for a friend who has gone OS on a holiday.  She is posting wonderful pictures of her trips to Machu Pichu while I am trying to navigate the hymnal and the complexities of dealing with a community choir.  It has been 6 weeks now.  I keep thinking it has been longer – much, much longer – but it hasn’t.  Thought they would have settled by now, but no.  Director of music is off indefinitely on stress leave.  You would think that would have told them something, but no.  I am just going to have to sit on them next week.  Meanwhile, I am being very public service – keep telling the traveling one that everything is going well, but not too well, in the hopes that I don’t spook her into staying OS.  She had better come back.  Please come back. Pretty please with cream and sugar and a descant on top!

Excitement, though – writing a meta-analysis or maybe two – my love of a good meta-analysis is unbounded. I hope I can do the field proud.  Music obs with the preschoolers at 11, then the Das Rheingold Symposium.  Orffing all weekend.  Would like to go to the movies. And buy some strawberries…

Day 2 of Project Week

It is day 2 of Project Week.  I do not know whether this phenomenon is unique to the conservatorium – I hope not because it is such a buzz.  A week of doing musical stuff.  Yesterday a presentation about community music.  Today – today – TODAY  – Simone Young rehearsing Mahler’s 2nd with the Hamburg Phil.  Also breathing with Margaret, writing with Jenny, and performance skills with Irene.  Awesome day – that will take me through to 10 – approaching fast.

Tomorrow, more Mahler – lunchtime Tango concert with Cecile….and a meeting with the supers….hmmmm…..should attempt to do some work and not go to Business of Music at 10…really, really should do some work…Tony Garcia is reinterpreting the guitar in the recital hall…really need to do some work…

Lets see what we can get done in an hour – there is a break between the two Mahler rehearsals tonight…oh, but there is a concert…

I’ll be off, then!

Well, I’m back…ethics has been disapproved…unapproved…..revoked…..and I haven’t even started the project…….back to work.

10 July

The aircon in the foyer is deceptively warm.  It is tomblike here today – cold and damp and quiet.    Our aircon is cold – and not a control in sight.  I think we share with the piano studios.  Have to turn it on for a while – no opening windows.  The stuffiness does add to the ambience, though.

I should be able to concentrate, but miss the buzzing and the noise.  No, I don’t I am so annoyed that everyone else but me is somewhere else doing something else that I cannot think to save myself.  I feel like such a wallflower.

And I couldn’t sleep.  Wide awake until the alarm went off, then instantly exhausted.

I am gradually encroaching on the other PhD’s space – a millimeter at a time.  I will have them both out the door soon.  I did warn them that if they went away to conferences and left me here alone this was likely to happen.  They have nobody but themselves to blame.
